10 Questions to Ask Your Therapist:

You should never feel obligated to spill your life story to someone you’ve just met— even if that person is a therapist. A first session should be able YOU evaluating THEM— not the other way around.

Not sure where to start? Here are 10 interview questions for a first session— any ethical and competent therapist should be able to easily answer them.

  1. Do you see a therapist regularly?

  2. Are there populations you feel less comfortable working with?

  3. What is your policy if I ever feel uncomfortable/unsafe/upset with something you say during session?

  4. What specialized training in trauma do you have?

  5. How will I know if therapy is working?

  6. How will I know when it is time to stop our work together and what is your policy for termination?

  7. What is your policy on me working with another therapist? (The answer should be, “Do what’s best for you.”)

  8. What are your self-care practices?

  9. What are your boundaries around self-disclosure?

  10. What type of continuing education classes do you like to take?

*Disclaimer: Not everyone has the option to choose a therapist. If you don’t have any choices and are stuck working with someone because of whatever reason, you can still ask these questions to help you figure out how much weight to give their guidance.
