How long will I have to be in therapy?

With somatic therapy, many clients experience relief after the first session. The length of therapy will depend upon your goals and specific situation. Some people start feeling better after a few sessions, for others it takes longer. The number of sessions depends on your history, the type of problem, and your ability to engage in the process both in session and out of session. Some clients schedule appointments weekly and some, if there is a crisis situation, come in two times a week. Some clients come in every other week. We will discuss your specific situation and create options for you to choose from.

Can't I just talk about my problems with my friends?

The short answer is yes! Friends and supportive family members are fantastic resources for you to talk to when you are struggling. Unfortunately, the areas of the brain responsible for language and reason are different from the areas that store trauma and cause distressing symptoms. That's why you can "tell your story" a thousand times and not feel any relief from symptoms. Somatic work addresses the areas of the brain that are responsible for emotions, specifically the limbic system.

It's kind of like cleaning a house. You can talk about cleaning the kitchen, you can try to figure out why the kitchen is messy, and you can discuss all the plans to get the kitchen clean, but until you actually get into the kitchen and start working on that room, the kitchen will remain messy. Working with the limbic system targets the "room" in your brain that is causing the symptoms of anxiety, stress, depression, etc.

What happens during an SE (Somatic Experiencing) session?

Britt is trained as an SE practictioner. What is SE?
You will not be asked to tell your 'story' or examine the past. Instead, you will be guided to gently release physical tensions, emotions and energy related to your trauma as they arise in the session, at a pace and in a way that best supports you return to a natural state of well being… Read More.
